Let me give you a short example of why this list exists:
Gary Lachman is one of the most prominent contemporary historians of Western esotericism, the occult, and counterculture. He acts as a crucial bridge between mainstream intellectual history and the often-misunderstood world of mysticism. Before becoming a full-time author, he was a founding member and bassist for the famous 1970s rock band Blondie. In regards to the Occult, Gary represents an academic bridge, chronologer of counterculture, and a highly accessible gateway for modern readers. He strips out the sensationalism normally entwined with consensus views and treatment.
To the mainstream and intellectual world, he represents a rare, respectable translator of the “bizarre” — a serious public intellectual who legitimizes fringe topics and separates historical reality from pop-culture yellow journalism. In fact, The New York Times and The Washington Post treat him as a reliable cultural historian, and intellectual heavyweights, like Erik Davis, lean on him. He has become the essential “Champion” for “The Outsider.”
And this is why this matters: I contacted Gary, with a cold intro at first… but things did warm a bit. He followed me on Social Media. He responded to some of my comments. We exchanged a couple of emails. Eventually, it felt appropriate for me to reach out with a specific piece I’d put a great deal of work into — but also something that should be of value to Gary’s own personal work and inquiry… And the exchange went like this:
